Leaving the house to take a drive in the winter should be done with caution. The roads can be slippery even when they look clear, and the weather can change quickly. Roadside emergencies can happen in any weather, but they are especially dangerous in the winter cold. Before heading out, there are a few things you can do to prepare before any inclement weather hits:
Make a survival kit. When you are putting together your survival kit, put in things that will help you survive until help arrives. Items should include a blanket or two, a small shovel, an ice scraper, a flashlight and batteries, ice melt or kitty litter, emergency flares or reflective triangles, a cell phone car charger, some snack foods that will keep in your trunk, water, a first aid kit, booster cables, and extra socks.
Running out of gas is not something you want to happen out on the highway. Even if you have roadside assistance, an empty gas tank means waiting in the cold for long periods of time. The best option is to fill the tank as often as you can and be aware of what the fuel level is before you head out on the road. If you are not sure that you can make it to your destination with the current amount of fuel in your car, stop and fill the tank before you start.
If possible, move the vehicle to the side of the road. Inclement weather and shorter days mean that visibility on the road is limited, and this will help to prevent further issues with your car. If the vehicle is still operable, try to reach a nearby parking lot. However, if you cannot do this, get the car out of the way of oncoming traffic as much as possible.
If you don’t think your car is that stuck, going outside to asses the situation to determine if you can get yourself out is okay. However, if the weather is nasty, it’s smarter to stay inside the car. If the ground around the vehicle is icy, you could slip and fall. There are also chances that other cars could hit you if you are standing on the road. Your best bet is to stay safe and warm inside the vehicle until the tow truck, and emergency responders arrive.
Even if you are on the side of the road, you don’t want passing drivers to get too close. Turn on the vehicle’s hazard lights and set the flares on the road behind you. Place the first one about 100 feet behind you, the second about 50 feet away, and the last next to the vehicle. This will make your presence clear to passing drivers.
First things first, before you attempt to evaluate your car’s situation, pull out your phone and alert the local authorities. Depending on the severity of your situation, it may take some time for emergency responders to get to you. The next thing you should do is call your local towing service. If conditions are bad, there could be multiple accidents in your area. So you’ll want to notify them as soon as possible to limit your wait time.
